Private Tuition
First-class 1:1 teaching for the AQA A Level Philosophy & OCR A Level Religious Studies exam boards
My Approach to Teaching
Comfort, familiarity, and rapport comes first. My priority is ensuring my student always feels respected in our time together; tuition shouldn’t be something they dread.
To do this, my student controls the content we cover, the style of lesson, and the pacing. Not only does this foster a deep understanding of the structure of the course they’re studying, but prepares them for higher education and gives them a real sense of agency - making the course less intimidating and mysterious.
We take breaks. This reduces the academic/social pressure, and facilitates the spaced repetition and active recall that is woven into all our discussions.
Styles of Lessons
Lecture-style teaching - for learning content, or when focus/energy levels aren’t allowing for more active contribution.
Essay writing - for consolidating content and preparing for exams.
Active questioning and recall - for moving content to long-term memory and ensuring our lesson is equivalent to multiple hours of independent revision, where students might not know what questions they need to be asking themselves.
Sometimes students need a mix of all three; we can switch it up throughout the lesson to keep them focused and engaged.
Lessons are typically one hour. Students might need longer lessons sometimes, especially as exams approach, so 90 minute and two-hour sessions are also offered.
Lessons can be as frequent as necessary. Twice a week is recommended in order to keep active-recall up throughout the week and reduce anxiety about writing.
As part of my student-led philosophy, students arrange lessons with me themselves. This shows a respect for their schedule, allows them to fit lessons into their revision timetables, and fosters our collaborative approach.
Payment is the parent’s domain, and I take care to keep you in the loop academically. Extra lessons and marking add-ons will always go through you.
